Birch Box UV Light Unit
DANGER: Ultra-Violet (UV) Light is HAZARDOUS. Must wear eye protection. Adhesive labels as reminders to use eye protection are available for your box. Please let us know if you would like us to send you one.

This hand made UV exposure unit has been custom designed for Solarplate exposures. Each unit can be safely used in any household or professional studio set-up. It’s practical size makes it easy to use and store. Although these units are custom made, other UV units (including the sun itself) are compatible with solarplates. If using a different unit, we suggest testing first to make sure you yield the right results.
◾Use for single and/or double Solarplate exposures.
◾For precise timing we suggest using a digital timer.
◾Unit is suitable for 8.5″x11″ plates or smaller. However, unit can be raised for experimenting with larger plates, as demonstrated in the Printmaking in the Sun DVD.

Tips:
Use a piece of thick glass, a little larger than the base of the box. At least 1/4 inch works well. Two pieces of perforated drawer liner (available at a dollar store or Bed Bath and beyond).
A totally flat surface or a 3/4 inch plywood.
Exposures would usually be 3 minutes for the screen and 2.5 minutes for the art (more or less, depending on the density of the art).
The bulbs are inserted and twisted. If you are not sure, try and get someone with experience to put them in for you.
The bottom of the unit is that portion which goes over the glass and the art. This maintains a ’safe’ hidden light as not to look at the UV bulbs when they are on.
